About JS-Examples.com

This site is running on a 3ghz 1gRAM blazing fast rack mounted server.
Its running with a Fiber Backbone connection in Rochester MN.

This site was created years ago when I was learning to develop web pages. At that time, and pretty much still today, there are no other sites that show you how to program in Javascript by presenting examples. Sure some people like to read books and learn about prototypes, etc. But most of us prefer to see some chunk of code running. Pick it apart, put it back together. Its like playing with tinker toys.

At that time, I was part of a company called Cyber Portal. This company is now gone, but has one lasting web site that we developed together: Jerry's Campers. Jerry's Campers has changed the site since then, but still is using the inventory system we wrote for them. We have an improved version of the Inventory System in our store. You can see a reminance of the company web site here.

I started this web site by grabbing some web space on Web Quarry.com and programming in straight HTML. The site had about 30 Javascripts on the site, and it was all manually linked and programmed. Maintaining that site structure and content was like wrestling with a pig, just not very fun and a bit of a mess.

Then I thought that Perl was the upcoming language, so I re-wrote some CGI files to spin out the site with a crude template system and a Poor-Man's-Database (a.k.a flat file database) that contianed the then about 120 javascript examples.

Next was a leap to MySQL. Setting up the database was the most important step in the whole thing. It took about 1 weekend [remember this is a hobby and not a full time job] to set up it. From there about 750 javascripts were added. The Perl programs were changed to use the MySQL instead of the flat files. It was working pretty good.
I worked out a deal with Web Quarry to get free web hosing for free advertising. I think they got the better deal as they grew from 50 or so clients to 500 over this time span. I should have been getting into the web hosting biz back then. Now its too late IMHO to compete with all the web hosting companies.
But by this time, I needed more bandwidth to serve out the site's pages to the increasing user community. So I hopped a deal with Atheosonline.com. I was by this time taking full development of a forum suite called Sporum, and Niles at Atheonsline.com had the domain name Sporum.org [which is now defunct - and the reason that site was moved to sporum.js-x.com]. So Niles set us up with free web space for free advertising. But I paid him for the web services anyways. During this time, professionally I was looking for a new job. I had an interview with some XYZ company and they didn't want to hire me because I didn't know ASP. BLAH at them. So I redid the entire site in PHP in 3 days. Now the site was running with MySQL backend and PHP. PHP Rules IMHO. But again I was needing more bandwidth. We were needing about 20gig/month. So yet again we moved the site.
So now the site is fully run by JS-X.com. I purchased a web server for sole use of JS-X.com. No more sharing bandwidth, or web admins reconfiguring something on the server that breaks your site. Full Control. Ahhh. Refreshing. But it did require me to completely build the server from scratch. Slackware Rules - IMHO. So here we are. A hobby that takes quiet a bit of time, but has its rewards.
